  • Most highly educated faculty in Cleveland area ...more than three-quarters hold master's degrees or higher.
  • Advanced Placement Classes: 17 offered...approximately one-third of students take one or more with 88% earning sufficiently high scores for college credit.
  • Foreign exchange programs with schools in Mexico, Japan, France, Germany, Russia, England, and China.
    • East meets West in Shaker's one-of-a-kind Asian Studies program. Offered in conjunction with the Cleveland Museum of Art, the course offers students a window into the history, culture, politics, and economy of Japan and China -- plus an opportunity to study in Takatori, Japan, or Shanghai, China.
    • Shaker Heights is one of four school districts in Ohio selected to host a visiting teacher from China during the 2006-07 school year.
  • Co-curricular Clubs: More than 50 co-curricular activities ranging from Academic Decathlon to Youth Ending Hunger to the Junior Council on World Affairs.

Recent Awards & Honors:

  • February 25, 2006: Woodbury School’s Science Olympiad team defeated Hawken, Mayfield, and several other schools to take home the overall first place trophy, a sportsmanship award, 12 individual trophies (including 6 first places) and 55 individual medals from the regional tournament held at Cleveland State University. The team competed in 24 different science-related events.
  • January 23, 2006: Youth Ending Hunger/Interact Club of Shaker Heights High School awarded the 2005 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award.
  • National Merit, National Achievement and Advanced Placement Scholars - consistently ranked among Ohio's top schools.
  • The only high school in Ohio, public or private, named to the Wall Street Journal's list of top 65 feeder schools for the nation's elite colleges.
  • Federal Reserve Challenge: Four consecutive District Four team titles in economics.
  • Recent state champions in women's lacrosse and men's tennis and ice hockey.
  • Grammy Signature School: Shaker Heights High School for outstanding vocal and instrumental programs in 1999 and 2004.
  • "Outstanding School" at the Cuyahoga County Regional Scholastic Art competition, producing more award winners than any other school

Hathaway Brown School is Ohio’s oldest independent preparatory school for girls in Grades K-12. Founded in 1876, the School celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2001. The student population is drawn from 60 communities in northeast Ohio, representing a diversity of family backgrounds and economic circumstances. School accreditation is by the Ohio State Department of Education and the Independent Schools Association for Central States.

Laurel School, founded in 1896, is a nationally recognized, independent, college preparatory day school for girls k-12, with a coeducational early childhood program. Laurel offers small classes taught by a distinguished faculty and a rigorous program of academics, athletics and the arts. The school has two campuses - the main 11-acre campus in Shaker Heights and a 140-acre campus approximately 10 miles to the east which features extensive athletic facilities and offers unlimited opportunities for leadership and outdoor education programs.

St. Dominic School is a co-educational Catholic school for students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Rooted in the teachings of Christ and accredited by the State of Ohio, programs provide academic excellence and educational tools for the development of the whole child, with a foundation in faith for lives of service and leadership. St. Dominic offers small classes and caring, experienced teachers who challenge students to give their very best. In addition to core curriculum classes, students participate in: Religion, Art, General Music, Computers, Physical Education, Spanish and Library Skills. Instrumental music is available through a private subcontract beginning in grade 4.
