Storm Water Management Plan

The City of Shaker Heights, as a charter member of the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership (DBWP) works through the DBWP, the Nature Center of Shaker Lakes (also a charter member) and other partners to protect, enhance and restore Doan Brook, including improving storm water management in the headwaters of the Doan Brook Watershed. The watershed includes the Shaker Lakes and over five miles of perennial streams within the City's borders. Read the City's Storm Water Management Plan

The City, the DBWP and the Nature Center are committed to making the public aware of the personal responsibilities expected of them and others in the community, including individual actions that can be taken to protect or improve the quality of area waters.

Storm Water Outfall Inspection Program

In 2006, the City completed an Outfall Inspection and Sampling Program with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. As a result, 105 storm water outfalls were identified, mapped and inspected in dry weather conditions to determine it there were any inappropriate inflows into the Doan Brook. The results were very positive and will be provided to the EPA as part of annual reporting requirements. The program will be repeated in spring of 2007. Specific results are on file at Public Works.

Guidelines for Downspout Disconnections

  1. Contact Public Works at 216-491-1490.
  2. Public Works will arrange for the Building Department to inspect the downspouts to be disconnected.
  3. After disconnection, contact Public Works to schedule a re-inspection. Re-inspection is required by City ordinance.
  4. If the disconnection is approved, a permit will be issued and mailed to you.

City ordinance requires that "downspout and roof drains shall not be connected to any sanitary sewer, but shall be connected to storm sewers where independent storm sewers are available.." To read the entire ordinance, search for Chapter: 123.05  STORM AND SANITARY SEWER CONNECTIONS in the City of Shaker Heights City Ordinances.
