Creative New Collaboration Supports Fire Safety in Shaker Heights
|
May 28, 2008: The City of Shaker Heights has formed an unusually “tasteful” partnership designed to promote fire safety for residents of the community. On June 7th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. a new campaign, Partners in Prevention, kicks off a collaboration among the Shaker Fire Department, University Hospitals and Marco’s Pizza that promises to make homes safer with added gusto – a free delivered pizza. Here’s how the new program works that evening:
- The Fire Department will follow randomly-selected Marco’s delivery vehicles with pizzas ordered from Shaker Heights addresses. At the door, along with a friendly delivery guy, homeowners will be greeted by the crew offering to check smoke detectors for safety.
- Residents can either refuse to allow the check and pay for the pizza order -- or accept the offer.
- If the resident has appropriately located working smoke detectors – pizza is free.
- If the homeowner has missing or non-functioning detectors, instead of free pizza the resident receives free installation of smoke detectors and batteries as needed ON THE SPOT….and also a 25% discount on the next Marco’s pizza order.
Recent national statistics show that 20% of homes do not have functioning smoke detectors. The City requires at least one smoke detector in the sleeping area in each dwelling unit and at least one on each additional level, including the basement. The fire department provides free smoke detectors to low-income residents on an ongoing basis and will install them for those who require assistance.
“This is a creative way to support safety in our community, and especially educate our residents on the importance of working smoke detectors,” says Mayor Earl Leiken. “The collaboration also includes funding support from University Hospitals, whose Management Services Center is located here.”
During the summer as part of the Partners in Prevention campaign, Fire Department personnel will canvas as many neighborhoods as possible inviting residents to receive fire safety literature and an opportunity to have a home safety survey. Residents may also call the department (491-1200) to schedule a home safety survey at their convenience.
Either way, residents can expect some savory incentives for assuring the protection of their homes: a free travel coffee mug just for accepting the survey and participation in a weekly Marco’s drawing for a free “Family Meal Deal,” providing all smoke detectors are found in working order. If problems are detected, residents may not be eligible for the drawing, but the fire department will offer to correct the problems.
