Life Safety Alert System: a personal emergency response system for Shaker residents who are elderly, handicapped or medically at risk linked directly to the Fire Department. The system continuously monitors for fire or medical emergencies in the home. Recommended for those who live alone.

The City installs ($20 fee) and maintains the system, which subscribers may lease for $15 a month, payable quarterly ($45). Units are assigned based on priorities relating to the resident’s need. A limited number of units is available at no cost to individuals whose incomes qualify under a Community Development Block Grant.

Meals on Wheels: available for those who cannot shop or cook for themselves. There is no age requirement. The service is provided for residents of Shaker Heights, University Heights, Beachwood and surrounding areas. A hot lunch and light supper are delivered by volunteers on weekdays between 12:00 Noon and 1:00 PM. Special diets are available. This is NOT a federally subsidized program. For more information, call 216-991-6376.
