[ARCHIVED] Help City Secure Federal Funding

Shaker Heights City Hall portico

Our staff works hard to get outside funding for City projects — and that includes funding from the U.S. government. You can help! Residents and business owners are invited to submit letters of support to Senator Sherrod Brown for two upcoming City projects: Lee Road and the Lomond-Lynnfield Sanitary Sewer Overflow. The City is working to secure funding for these vital community projects through the federal appropriations process and your support could make the difference. Thank you!

Here's how to help:

1. Prepare your letter of support (use sample letters below or write your own).

2. Email Senator Sherrod Brown: Go to https://www.brown.senate.gov/contact/email. Fill out the form, including with your letter (as noted, you can use the letters below or write your own)

Deadline: May 13

Note: Rep. Shontel Brown's deadline has passed. Thank you to the residents who emailed Rep. Brown.

LEE ROAD

Select the Message Topic or Issue of Concern: Transportation

Dear (Member):

I’m writing in support of the Shaker Heights Community Project Funding request for Lee Road.  This project would reconstruct the crumbling street and calm traffic, provide pedestrian and bicycle amenities where none currently exist, encourage economic development in diverse neighborhoods, and support adjacent residential neighborhoods. A recent study found that 415 crashes were reported in the last three years on Lee Road, with eight pedestrian and bike crashes. Crashes in the project area are 5% higher than the state average. As a resident of Shaker Heights, I believe this project is critical to improving pedestrian safety and the economic vitality of our community and the Northeast Ohio region. Thank you for your consideration.

 Sincerely,

LYNNFIELD/LOMOND SSO

Select the Message Topic or Issue of Concern:  Environment

Dear (Member):

I’m writing in support of the Shaker Heights Community Project Funding request for the Lomond-Lynnfield Sanitary Sewer Overflow Project. Rain events (which are increasing due to global climate change) can overwhelm our sewer system, leading to overflows that cause a mixture of sewage and stormwater to back up into buildings and homes. Worse yet, this overflow ultimately results in dumping raw sewage into Lake Erie, harming public health, the environment and the regional economy. This project will help update Shaker Heights’s aging water and sewer infrastructure and alleviate these harms. As a citizen of Shaker Heights, I believe this project is important to sanitation safety and environmental risk mitigation in our community, the Northeast Ohio region, and Lake Erie. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
