Summer 2021

Dear Shaker Resident,

As the summer winds down, Economic Development in Shaker is in full swing. Our commercial districts are nearly full and we welcome many new businesses to our community. There are shovels in the ground on a new senior living facility. And, there are opportunities to engage in new programs such as the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee and Shaker Heights Business Appreciation Mixer (SH-BAM) Recognition Committee. We hope you will find inspiration to engage, participate and support the vitality of Shaker through the Economic Development stories shared here.

Regards,
Laura Englehart
Director of Economic Development, City of Shaker Heights

Bar None

Real Estate, Home Services, Café & Wine, Oh My!

The corner of Chagrin and Lomond is now home to three new businesses including: Berkshire Hathaway Professional Realty Services, Executive Home Management and
BarNone. Barbara Babcock, Director of Market Development for Berkshire Hathaway, has spent the last year transforming the former Juma Gallery space into a modern workspace for realtors and a welcoming environment for their clients. Working with Ann King from Borrow Curated for the interior renovations and the City’s Storefront Renovation Program with Shaker-based Gibbon Architecture for the forthcoming exterior changes, Barbara and company owner, David Mussari, are truly investing in District South, a historic property on Chagrin Boulevard within the Van Aken District. Berkshire Hathaway is a full-service brokerage real estate office.

The building is also home to Shaker resident Jared Zak’s business, Executive Home Management Inc. Jared’s company provides high-end customized home management services for your personal residence and/or second home. With over 20 years of residential property management and home maintenance experience, all of the hassles and headaches of home ownership are handled with their comprehensive membership packages. Jared is also an agent with Berkshire Hathaway.

Then, the easternmost portion of the property is home to BarNone (20106 Chagrin). The owner, Michael Resnick, built a dedicated following over 30 years in University Heights before re-opening in Shaker. Michael is sharing his love for the business of wine and small batch, quality, yet affordable wines while adding a café vibe and menu to his new Shaker Heights location. Innovative sandwiches, salads, and breakfast items are available now, while a full on-site bar with 90 wines by the glass, craft beer on tap and wine retail sales are forthcoming upon transfer of the BarNone liquor license. BarNone also offers gift baskets. BarNone is sure to become a special neighborhood gathering spot! Be sure to like the BarNone Facebook page so that you can be tempted by their daily specials!

Resale Shop - Reclamation

Now Open at 16704 Chagrin

Always into fashion, mixed with a love for thrifting and DIY projects, Orange native, Makya Murray opened her secondhand retail shop, Reclamation, in the Chagrin-Lee area in July. Makya’s experience working at a non-profit thrift store and consignment shop inspired her to open the shop. Why Shaker? The storefront was a “perfect fit” for her vision. Located on the south side of Chagrin opposite Heinen’s, Reclamation specializes in secondhand clothing and housewares. The merchandise is curated by Makya personally, who is always on the lookout for trendy, unique pieces. While the shop has a universally wide appeal, the customer base in the first month is primarily those in their twenties and thirties. Follow Reclamation on Instagram and Facebook, and, of course, stop in to find your pre-loved treasure.

There’s a New Agent in Town:
Ryan King State Farm Insurance

As a fifth generation State Farm agent, having operated his own business for 12 years, Ryan King has decided to move his business from Twinsburg to be closer to his University Heights home. The pandemic demonstrated that this move would be doable, as the use of technology supplied by State Farm was substantial and made for a smooth transition to a more digital way to connect with, and support, clients. By locating in the former Irish Trading Company space at 20616 John Carroll Blvd, he will have a 6-minute walking commute, making family time all the more plentiful. The new office will be open Monday through Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm, by September 1, so in-person appointments will certainly be available, in addition to virtually. In the meantime, reach out to Ryan by phone at 440.439.9990. Services include insurance (auto, home, commercial, life and health) and financial planning, banking and mortgages. SH-BAM 2020. The Zoom Edition.

SH-BAM Recognition Committee Needs You!

Since 2014, the City and Heights-Hillcrest Regional Chamber of Commerce (HRCC) have hosted the Shaker Heights Business Appreciation Mixer (SH-BAM) to celebrate the contributions of our business community. The annual 90+-person event is a way for businesses to network with one another outside of the work environment while enjoying local food, drink and treats amidst live, local music. With the pandemic still in full swing last year, it wasn't possible to hold a live event in 2020. The pandemic hit businesses hardest, so we still wanted to find a way to honor and celebrate them even if only in a virtual setting. Thus, the NEW recognition program was born in partnership with Shaker Heights Development Corporation and HRCC! We had a small, but mighty community-based committee nominate and select businesses to be recognized in a range of categories. Plus we had some great, business-centric raffle prizes for attendees. We made the most of the virtual situation to spread some joy and share more about businesses who are doing great work.

This year, we want to broaden the committee and need your help! Are you devoted to shopping and eating local? Do you look to hire locally-owned companies for professional services? If so, you would be great for this committee. The time commitment is minimal, just three hours max, plus attending the event - if you like (we hope to have in-person this fall). Please send an email to Katharyne Starinsky to express your interest. We need your input!
