Shaker Life Receives Two National AwardsThe Award of Excellence was given for the cover of the Winter 2021 issue featuring artist and Shaker resident Julius DeWitt Hannah. The photograph is by Angelo Merendino. The Savvy Award for photography was given for photographs in the feature The Evolution of Residential Architecture from the Summer 2020 issue. It highlighted a new home designed by longtime Shaker residents and Cleveland architects Ron Reed and Vince Leskosky. The photographs were taken by Kevin Reeves.

City Celebrates October 6 Energy Efficiency Day and October 9 Rooftop Solar DayMark you calendar! Wednesday, October 6 is Energy Efficiency Day and Saturday, October 9 is Rooftop Solar Day in the City of Shaker Heights.
On October 6, the City will join a nationwide network of organizations to celebrate the Energy Efficiency Day. The City will be highlighting its efforts to be more energy efficient — including adopting LED lighting for all City buildings — on social media at the hashtag ##EEDay2021. Residents are encouraged to share their efforts using the same hashtag.
On October 9, the Energy Subcommittee of the City's Sustainability Committee will hold the Shaker Heights Solar Home Tour to showcase residential solar installations in the community (see details below in the Events section). November 2 Election InformationThe November 2 General Election is a countywide election. Voters in Shaker Heights will be electing representatives to City Council, School Board and for Shaker Heights Muncipal Court judge, as well as for Congressional Representative for the vacant 11th District seat previously held by Rep. Marcia Fudge. On Election Day the polls are open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. Please bring identification.
Voters who wish to Vote-by-Mail must complete and submit a ballot application. Applications must be received by the Saturday before election day. To request a Vote-by-Mail ballot application, visit: www.443vote.us or call 216-443-VOTE (8683). Vote-by-Mail ballot applications are also available at all public libraries.
Early In-Person Voting begins on October 5. Check early voting hours on the Board of Elections website www.443vote.us.

Green, Blue Line Rapid Service Resumes October 3Repair work continues on the Blue and Green Line rapid lines east of Tower City through October 2. Service has been replaced with 67R buses.
67R buses are following a special route during this shutdown, operating to/from Green Road via Van Aken Boulevard and Warrensville Center Road. Regular service is scheduled to resume on Sunday, October 3.

Yard Waste Bag Season Continues Through Mid-OctoberShaker Heights recycles yard waste into mulch and compost, but the program only works if residents put the right stuff in their yard-waste bags. Residents should use brown yard-waste bags (available at area stores) for all yard waste, except brush through mid-October. Bags should be placed on lawns the morning of your scheduled pickup. Watch the video to the right to learn what belongs in the bag.
NOTE: Beginning October 16, leaves will be collected from tree lawns six days a week to ensure timely collection.

Fall Ice Activities at Thornton Park When it comes to fun fall activities for the whole family, look no further than the Thornton Park Ice Arena, which offers a variety of public skating sessions each week, including Tuesday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons starting the week of October 5.
Also returning this fall are the popular Friday Night DJ Skates. The season kicks off with the Halloween Skate on Friday, October 29 from 7:45-9:45 pm. Friday Night Skates continue on November 5, 12, and 19, and December 3 and 17 from 7:45-9 pm. View the full rink schedule. Faithfully Fit Fitness and Emily Roggenburk Studios Now OpenShaker resident, Maridah Akram, opened her fitness studio this month at 16706 Chagrin Boulevard. Maridah is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Group Fitness and Cycling Instructor and Personal Trainer. In addition to hosting a variety of fitness classes, Maridah has an online shop for fitness accessories. Emily Roggenburk Studios has opened between Domo Sushi & Yakitori and Lox, Stock and Brisket, adding to the diversity of retail goods offered in the Van Aken Market Hall. The shop specializes in hometown pride and empowerment apparel.

Shaker residents are invited to volunteer to serve on a variety of committees, boards, commissions and task forces alongside their elected officials and City staff. When a term ends, or a vacancy occurs, the Mayor makes appointments of both Council members and residents.
Terms range between two and six years.

'I Come as One' Exhibit Opens at Shaker Historical Society October 1October 1 - December 12 On Friday, October 1 at 6 pm, a new exhibit entitled “I Come As One: Stories of Unconquerable Single Black Parents” opens at the Shaker Historical Society. Organized by Kim Harris of Shaker African American Mothers Support (S.A.M.S.) and the Shaker Heights Public Library's Ali Black, this exhibit displays the unconquerable strength of a single black mother through photographs, stories, and art. These students will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards that will be offered next spring, and will be candidates for other scholarships, as well. Virtual Parent/Teacher ConferencesShaker Heights Schools will conduct all parent/teacher conferences virtually on Thursday and Friday, October 21 and 22.
