Sustainability Spotlight
Sustainability Spotlight - Tree Canopy

Restoring Our Tree Canopy

Trees aren't just beautiful, they provide important environmental benefits to communities, like reducing stormwater runoff, saving energy, lowering city temperatures, reducing air pollution, enhancing property values, providing wildlife habitat, and lots more.

For a variety of reasons, Cuyahoga County has been losing tree canopy, including here in Shaker Heights. But we're working hard to reverse that trend. For example, this fall, the City planted almost 150 new trees on the Van Aken Boulevard median, funded by a $50,000 grant from Cuyahoga County.

Fun fact: The City is using GIS data to determine where our tree canopy is lowest and then will target those areas for restoration. This spring, that will include new plantings in our Moreland and Ludlow neighborhoods, also funded by a grant. Learn more about the County's tree canopy assessment program — and dig into the GIS data yourself!
