Nominations for 2022 Preservation Month awards

Submit Preservation Awards nominations through March 31


Nominations may be submitted for any building in Shaker Heights, including homes and apartment buildings, commercial buildings, and other structures. Exterior projects completed after April 2019 are eligible.
Award categories include:

  • Retention of Original Materials
  • Exterior Restoration
  • Excellence in Stewardship
  • Distinguished Landscape
  • Architecturally Appropriate Addition
  • Other
Submissions will be accepted online through March 31. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in the fall. View 2020 recipients.

Preservation Month Photo Contest Now Accepting Submissions


The Shaker Heights Landmark Commission seeks submissions to its tenth annual Preservation Month Photo Contest. The contest was created in honor of National Preservation Month, which is celebrated each May by preservation organizations across the country. The community is invited to submit photos of what makes Shaker "Shaker." Submit photos on Instagram using the hashtag #PreserveSH22  through June 3.

Every Tuesday in March at the Shaker Main Library, AARP tax volunteers will offer free individualized tax preparations for low-to-moderate-income taxpayers - especially those 60 and up  Call 216-751-0171 to leave a message (Please include your phone number) and a volunteer will call to schedule your appointment.

Deadline for Utility Box Design Submissions is March 4


The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is pleased to announce a juried competition for this year’s utility box project called Painting the Town.

SHAC is looking for artists 21 years or older who live or    work in Shaker Heights. Applicants who reside in the Shaker Heights School District or are a member of the Shaker Arts Council are also eligible. Designs and applications must be submitted no later than Friday, March 4 at 5 pm. For more information and to download the call, application, and template visit the SHAC website.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) offers several cost-saving programs to qualified residents for sewer bill assistance including:

  • Crisis Assistance for life events like job loss or medical expenses
  • Homestead* or Affordability Program 40% discount for qualified customers. (Property must be owner occupied.)

Registration Open for Spring and Summer Recreation Programs


Our Spring/Summer 2022 Recreation Catalog is now available and registration for all spring and summer programs and summer camps is open! Many camps are filling up quickly, so please don’t delay in registering. Thornton Park Pool passes are also on sale now and early bird pricing is available through April 4. Registration is available in person, by phone, or online through the online registration system.

Adun Spice Co. opened February 18 in the Van Aken District Market Hall. The name “Adun” means flavor, sweet and sweetness in the Yoruba language, a tribute to owner Ramat Wiley's Nigerian heritage.

Reimagined fairy tales

S.A.M.S. Presents Re-imagined Fairy Tales Event at Van Aken District

For Black History Month, and in conjunction with National Fairy Tale Day, S.A.M.S. (Shaker African-American Moms Support) will "re-imagine" several well-known fairy tales. Hear stories that have been remixed by youth in our community, and listen as they talk about how they feel about not being represented in fairy tales.

Heritage Home Program 'Rehab 101' Virtual Session


Wednesday, March 23

This virtual presentation will go over the tips and tricks to help homeowners through their rehab and renovation projects. From planning what to start with to checking if a final inspection has been completed - it will all be covered. Registration is free and required. Spring Recess
As a reminder to Shaker Heights Schools families, spring recess begins Monday, March 28 and ends Friday, April 1. Classes resume Monday, April 4.

Shaker Heights Spring Musical
The Shaker Heights High School Theatre Arts Department presents this year's spring musical, Barnum, playing Thursday, March 17 through Saturday, March 19 at 7 pm each evening at the Shaker Heights High School large auditorium. This family-friendly production features work from over 50 students, including performers, musicians and students from our stagecraft and theater management classes. Tickets are available now and can be purchased through  Shakertheatre.ludus.com.

Last Call to Purchase Red & White Tickets
The 30th Annual A Night for the Red & White is Saturday, March 5 at Landerhaven. Tickets may sell out for this year's event; be sure to reserve your tickets now so you won’t miss out on the big celebration. This year’s event supports wellness and success for all Shaker students. Raffle tickets are also available: one package includes everything needed for a special Disney vacation experience and can be used anytime with no expiration date. The second package features a trip to New York City - complete with airfare and hotel, tickets to a Broadway show, and museums; dates are flexible. Anyone over 21 may purchase, and need not be present to win. The silent auction opens online February 28 and features many wonderful donations from Shaker businesses whose support is greatly appreciated!
