The Shaker Heights Landmark Commission announces winners of the seventh annual Preservation Month Photo Contest. The contest, created in 2013, honors Preservation Month, which is celebrated each May by preservation organizations across the country. This year’s contest was on Instagram. Twenty photographers submitted 48 entries at the hashtag #PreserveSH19.

The contest encouraged residents and visitors to submit images showcasing what makes Shaker “Shaker.” Submissions ranged from specific architectural details and landmark buildings to neighborhood scenes, events, streets and parks.

The Commission selected a grand prize winner and three runners-up. In addition, the People’s Choice award was given to the submission receiving the most likes on Instagram. All entries can be viewed at the Instagram hashtag #PreserveSH19.

The Van Sweringens Remake the Face of Cleveland

Joseph Blake, SHHS Class of 1964, wrote his University of Notre Dame senior thesis on the Van Sweringen developments in Cleveland. After a lifetime spent in business overseas, Joe returns to Shaker Heights on the occasion of his 55th high school reunion and will speak about the Van Sweringen brothers’ influence on Greater Cleveland. Do not miss this rare opportunity to hear from a Van Sweringen expert.

Home Repair Resource Center: Wiring and Switches

Come learn how electricity works in your home and how to take the fear out of making common fixes. In this workshop, the HRRC staff will help you work with wires (how to strip them and connect them), switches (how they’re wired and how to replace them), and lights. $18.75 for Shaker residents.

Visit the Shaker Historical Society and learn about the Tudor revival style of architecture, the Tudors who inspired it, and how it is expressed in Shaker Heights. This exhibit is open Wednesday through Friday, 11am-5pm; on Sundays 2-5pm; and the first Saturday of the month from noon-5pm.

Cleveland Restoration Society's 2019 Benefit - Say Goodbye to Summer!

You are invited to experience the splendor of Harcourt Manor at the Cleveland Restoration Society’s 2019 Benefit, Say Goodbye to Summer!

Hosts and property owners, Anya and John Rudd, recently completed a magnificent transformation of this prized estate! This exemplary project honors Cleveland heritage while demonstrating how an elaborate historic home can be brought forward into the 21st century.

Harcourt Manor was designed by renowned Cleveland architect Frank Meade and is surrounded by a nearly two-acre landscape. The craftsmanship of this rehabilitation project was recognized at the 2019 Cleveland Restoration Society’s Celebration of Preservation awards program.

Shaker Historical Society's Century House Birthday Party

Join the Shaker Historical Society at the Market Hall for a celebration of historic properties in Shaker Heights, complete with cake and ice cream. The Shaker Heights Public Library, Landmark Commission, and Cleveland Restoration Society will be present to share their resources.

This event is presented, in part, thanks to a grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and a grant from NOPEC in partnership with the City of Shaker Heights. This will be a FREE event for Shaker Heights residents.

Warrensville West Cemetery Tour

The Warrensville West Cemetery contains plenty of Shaker Heights history, but many people don't even know it exists. Just in time for Halloween and the Day of the Dead, join us for a guided cemetery tour to learn about the history of Warrensville Township and Shaker Heights, and about the famous and forgotten who are buried here.

The Cleveland Restoration Society's Heritage Home Program offers a range of services to help you repair, maintain, and rehab your older home, while retaining architectural features and increasing your home’s value. If you live in a Shaker home that is at least 50 years old, there are a number of free services available to you, including site visits, paint color consultations, and review of contractor estimates.
