Ready for fun? To get in shape? Or pursue a passion? Throughout the year, the Shaker Heights Recreation Department offers programs for residents of all ages and interests, ranging from fitness to the arts and many things in between. Preschoolers can learn to swim, dance and lots more; school-aged children can participate in summer camp, enrichment classes, and sports leagues. There's plenty for adults and seniors, too. The Recreation Department is pleased to offer year-round programming for adults. Get moving in a fitness class; discover the joys of learning a new sport; or tap into your artistic side, including in classes presented by the Shaker Arts Council. Find current offerings online or in our current brochure (PDF).

Learn more about our School-Age Care program, which includes before- and after-care programs for the Shaker Schools, as well as fun programming options for school holidays.  

Your pre-schooler can learn to skate, swim, even play basketball in an age-appropriate setting. Or enjoy art and imaginative play at one of our pre-school enrichment programs. Find current offerings online or in our current brochure (PDF).

The Recreation Department offers regular programming for seniors at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building (3450 Lee Rd.), including free weekly social and fitness programs, as well as classes that require registration. Looking to swim laps, learn to swim, or just splash around with the kids? You've come to the right place. The City of Shaker Heights offers two recreational pools, as well as a variety of swim programs for all ages.


Thornton Park Pool
Open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, this beautiful outdoor swimming
pool boasts lap lanes, a diving well, water slides, and a current channel. There's also a separate tot pool and splash pad. Learn more about Thornton Park Pool.

Woodbury Pool
When Thornton Park Pool closes for the season, residents are invited to swim at Woodbury Pool located at Woodbury School (15400 S. Woodland Rd.).

Children ages 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Lap swimming is limited during open swim hours. An unlimited use pool pass for all open and lap swimming is available for purchase online or at Thornton Park for $35 per person. A family pass is not available.

Aquatics Programs

Community Aquatics Programs
Shaker Sharks offers a competitive swimming program in Shaker Heights for K-8 students, plus a Master's program for adults. Learn more at the Shaker Sharks website.

The Recreation Department is pleased to partner with Shaker Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) to provide a quality youth hockey program at Thornton Park Ice Arena. Players can learn the fundamentals of the sport in the Department's Learn to Skate program or play competitively in SYHA's league program.

Skaters of all ages are invited to experience the benefits of skating through the Recreation Department's popular Learn to Skate program. Age groups include Baby Blades (ages 1.5-3), Snowplow Sam (ages 3-5), Basic (ages 6-plus), and Adult (ages 18-plus).

Every spring, Shaker's figure skaters are invited to participate in the Annual Ice Show sponsored by the Recreation Department.

The Recreation Department is also pleased to partner with the Shaker Figure Skating Club, which offers Shaker residents opportunities for competitive figure skating.

The Getaway is a free after-school program for Shaker High students. The program offers a safe, fun place for teenagers to hang out. Amenities include free TV, WiFi, video games, charging stations, snacks, and more.

Throughout the year, the Recreation Department offers a variety of free pop-up programs for residents. These programs are designed to bring residents together in the City's many recreational venues, including in our many beautiful City parks. Examples of programs include Yoga in the Park, Tai Chi, Boot Camp and other fitness activities; STEAM programming for kids; and arts activities for grown-ups and teenagers.

The Recreation Department is pleased to host a variety of special events each year, including the Memorial Day Parade, the Annual 4th of July Pool Party, and the Doggie Dip. In addition, the Department offers a year-round series of free pop-up fitness and educational programming, as well as outdoor movies and music during the summer months.

Fun is on tap at the many summer camps offered by the Shaker Heights Recreation Department.

Traditional Camps

The Department offers traditional camp for children grades K-8. K-2 includes creative arts and sports such as swimming, t-ball, soccer, and basketball. Grades 3-8 are able to design their own camp day, choosing from a variety of activities such as sports, arts and crafts, hiking, science, swimming, volleyball, and soccer. Field trips every other week are part of the schedule for both age groups. Before and after care are available for those who are registered for camp. Half-day camp options are available.

Sports and Specialty Camps

Shaker also offers the following sports camps: baseball, basketball, flag football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. Specialty camps include band camp and computer camps. Other Shaker Recreation options include Safety Town, Teens Learning to Connect, and ice skating. The popular Adventure Camp offers a week full of outdoor activities, including river rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and biking.

The Lynn Ruffner Recreation for Youth Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to help Shaker Heights' youth attend summer camp. Scholarships are awarded based on qualifying need.
