David E. Weiss was appointed and sworn in as Mayor of the City of Shaker Heights on April 9, 2018, filling the position vacated by Mayor Earl M. Leiken.


Personal History

A longtime resident of Shaker Heights, Weiss brings to the Mayor's Office over three decades of legal and business experience – particularly in the area of real estate, as well as significant participation in Shaker Heights government. He has served as an elected council member for the City (1996-99) and as a member of the Shaker Heights Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.


Education & Career History

Prior to his appointment as Mayor, Weiss was an executive officer at DDR Corp., a real estate investment company, for more than 18 years, most recently serving as Executive Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel. Mayor Weiss also is a former partner of the Cleveland-based law firm McDonald, Hopkins. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and Juris Doctor degree from The Ohio State University College of Law.


Service Information

Mayor Weiss is also the owner of Juma Gallery and Brew at Juma, a boutique and café located in Shaker's "District South" commercial area and is involved in many professional, civic, and charitable organizations. Currently, he serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of The Centers for Families and Children and is a member of the Board of Directors of The City Club Forum Foundation. Mayor Weiss is a past President of the Shaker Heights-based Family Connections; former Co-Chair of the Policy Sub-Committee, which advised Cuyahoga County on the development of universal pre-K; and has served on The Visiting Committee of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University.
